ABSTRACT

In male sexual socialization, the message is that “normal” sex involves totally predictable erection, intercourse, and orgasm. For adult couples, the Good Enough Sex (GES) model of sharing pleasure as a couple is much superior to the individual perfect intercourse performance model in facilitating sexual desire and satisfaction. By its nature couple sexuality is anti-perfectionism. GES recognizes the multiple roles, meanings, and outcomes of couple sexuality. GES acknowledges that a major factor in sexual satisfaction is maintaining positive, realistic sexual expectations. Although the best sexual experiences are mutual and synchronous, it is crucial to be aware that most sexual experiences are positive yet asynchronous (better for one partner than the other). GES accepts both synchronous and asynchronous sexuality. GES asks both partners to accept personal vulnerabilities and embrace variable, flexible couple sexuality.
