ABSTRACT

This chapter offers narratives of five equitable and excellent in-service teachers that were prepared in pre-service with the Framework for Equitable and Excellent Teaching (FEET). The teachers share their perceptions of teaching and provide rich descriptions of their classroom practices. The chapter paints a vivid picture of the potential of culturally responsive teacher evaluation to develop equitable and excellent teaching. The teachers come from different backgrounds and are in different stages of their careers, but they express similar themes about what it means to be an equitable and excellent teacher. These teachers were trained with the FEET, which places a heavy emphasis on culturally responsive practices through a positive learning environment, culturally relevant curricula, teaching for social justice, and continuous reflection on their own practice. The teachers stress the importance of knowing their students, not only to develop relationships, but also to connect content to their lives.
