ABSTRACT

The political system in Taiwan between 1950 and 1986 may be described as colonialist, authoritarian and Chinese in orientation. In May of 1949, Martial Law was proclaimed all over the Taiwanese provinces. The political system, the political parties and the electoral system in Taiwan have developed along different lines during 40 years of political development. In 1994, the candidates for the magistrate of Taiwan province and the councilman of provinces, cities and counties were nominated by the National Campaign and Development Committee (NCDC). In the 1995 legislative election, the NCDC set up a nomination committee with 71 committee members. The Public Officials Election and Recall Law has regulations on the financial sources of the political parties. The political association must be organized and operated in accordance with the principle of democracy. The means of punishment for a political party include warnings, rearrangement, limited duration and disablement.
