Unusual solutions

ByA. H. Brafman

These are stories from my work in the NHS as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. They are being described because of the manner in which the presenting symptom came to be eliminated—not the usual textbook recommended therapy, but some unexpected comment or recommendation that enabled the patient to overcome his complaint—and sometimes not my intervention. Sadly, these were solutions that could not simply be implemented with the next difficult patient, but I found them fascinating lessons of some children’s empathy and creativity. I believe they are well worth recounting.
