ABSTRACT

The Housing Act 1996 gave more housing association tenants the right to buy their home at a discount and provided for a register of social landlords to be kept by the Housing Corporation. P. Allanson and M. Whitby have edited a book on The Rural Economy which aims to summarise some of the findings of the major publicly funded research programmes into rural employment issues. In terms of implementing policies a study by Oxford Brookes University for the Department of the Environment revealed that planners were implementing policies in PPG7 which called for a more relaxed approach to rural diversification on farms. Examples of how communities could help themselves to achieve economic regeneration have been provided by C. Minay who identified 100 rural community schemes. The Rural Development Commission also published a report on the impact of the peace dividend on rural England prepared by the Economists Advisory Group and ECOTEC.
