ABSTRACT

Although scaffolding is a basic element of the construction process, our knowledge about ancient scaffolding systems is limited; this is an inevitable consequence of the temporary nature of these structures and ensuing lack of archaeological evidence. All typical scaffolding parts (such as standards, ledgers, putlogs, walkways, ladders, braces, ties, and guardrails), were normally disassembled after use, only the putlog itself can leave behind

1.1 Temporary structures on construction sites

Construction sites were, and are characterized by a large number of temporary auxiliary structures, such as working platforms, formwork, falsework, etc., that provide access and serve to transport materials. Generally, a distinction is made between the structures needed for the erection of walls and pillars on the one hand, and those needed for arches and vaults on the other hand.
