ABSTRACT

Using an efficient method to restrict the magnitude of the neighboring ground deformation in stabilizing deep urban excavations is highly recommended. The Stress Based Design of a retaining wall does not consider an allowable deformation range for the neighboring structures; therefore, Deformation or Performance Based Design (PBD) presents a more appropriate criterion in designing deep excavations. In the current study it is endeavored to approach a PBD method considering Top-Down construction in the geotechnical conditions of Qom in Iran. Geodetic surveys are applied by use of Total Station TS02 to monitor the field performances. According to the geodetic analysis, numerical model is calibrated. By dividing the geotechnical conditions into four different geotechnical types and taking the structural elements as variables in the calibrated model, exponential graphs are presented which enables to design excavation support systems in the studied geotechnical conditions on the basis of performance.
