ABSTRACT

The present chapter is based on the work and labour processes within a specific manufacturing industry in Assam. This chapter focuses on the objectives to understand the organisational structure of the cement-manufacturing industry, the labour process in cement industry and its connection with work and production. The authority to give employment rests on the management, although, at the same time, the contractors and supervisors act as employers in terms of providing information about jobs and job opportunities to the workers. The technical force is not only the sole agent involved in the controlling process, but also technical tools are utilised in designing the flow of work to minimise the transformation of labour power into labour. Keeping this in mind, research has been carried out by using quantitative and qualitative methods. In innumerable ways, cement is being used globally in the construction industry and is considered a source of significant revenue and capital. This growing demand for the resource also requires the skills of a huge workforce in order to run smoothly. Aspects of the industry such as employment security, control of work, schemes to improve performance, the medium of control and the decision-making responsibility residing at the lowest appropriate level of the organisation have been analysed in this research.
