ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the literature on intersex identities, pulling largely from outside of the field of higher education. I then aim to provide a context for higher education, pointing out some of the similarities within trans* and LGBTQ+ identities, the issues students face on campus, and how policies and practices around the institutionalization of sex and gender within postsecondary education impacts the experiences of intersex students. In closing, I offer some next steps for future research that centers intersex students specifically.
