ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a study of the design, evolution, and performance of the pension fund management market in Chile. It looks at the incipient pension fund management markets in Peru and Argentina. The chapter provides a description of the main features of the Chilean pension fund management market as a whole. It shows that information on providers, products, commissions, revenues, operational costs, and rates of return. The chapter discusses the existing regulatory structure, and identifies the main trends. It examines pension fund managers at a more disaggregated level. The chapter also discusses their market share, size, costs, strategy, and performance over time. It fcouses on the effectiveness of the mix of competition and regulation. The chapter describes the implications of this for future pension provision. It suggests that the study of the pension fund management market to other Latin American countries.
