ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the analysis of aggregate pension scheme coverage rates with a disaggregated analysis of household data. It compares the findings for Chile with the evolution of pension scheme coverage rates in other countries in Latin America, and especially Peru and Argentina. The chapter explores common trends and discusses the likely course of pension scheme coverage, and the longer term impact of pension reform upon the labour market. It analyses the trends in pension scheme coverage observed in Chile will be compared to those in other Latin American countries. The chapter provides some indicators of the size of the membership of the new pension schemes in Chile, Argentina and Peru. The proportion of the labour force actively contributing to the private and public pension schemes in Chile has risen since the early 1980s when pension reform was implemented. In Chile as was noted, rates of coverage for women are slightly higher than rates of coverage for men.
