ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide the reader some understanding of research on the issues of regional policy with specific reference to the question of marginality and marginal issues. It looks at the issues from the point of view of a general Nordic perspective rather than concentrating on any single country. The chapter deals with a discussion of the role of marginality and its importance for the field of regional policy research as a whole and utilises a narrative approach to the issues of regional policy research and questions of marginality. There are a large number of references available to the geographer on regional research which consider various aspects of regional policy and the regional development of peripheral and marginal area topics. Regional policies in the Nordic Countries are extremely diverse as regional policy research has been implemented not only geographers but also by regional scientists, economists, sociologists and historians.
