ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the research of a group of geographers and regional economists who have been working for a long time on the issue of marginality. It aims to show the complexity of the issue. The future work that will be done by the IGU Commission on Dynamics in Marginal and Critical Regions reflects this complexity, since the 'mandate' or the focus of the commission is to look at the following global development processes: Regions facing critical environmental conditions, either because of specific conditions for food production, or they have been living through with particular natural or man-made hazards. The role of special regional effect is very important as one tries to understand how the whole concept of marginality develops. The role and scope of marginality are taken up in a very broad way.
