ABSTRACT

The University of Georgia operates a comprehensive outreach and public service program in keeping with its role as the state's land-grant university. Georgia's nationally acclaimed HOPE scholarship program offers free tuition for high school students who enter with a "B" average and maintain it throughout their enrollment at any public university in Georgia. The Board of Regents oversees the University System of Georgia which supervises all 35 institutions in the system."The economy has been booming so we are encouraging the University to grow and bring in multi-million dollar businesses such as biotechnology" said one interviewee. The implication is that the work of the university is highly supported because the benefits to state citizens are clear. Supporting its outreach initiative, the University of Georgia has adopted an alternative public service career ladder, which encourages faculty to focus on matters of public concern. Interviewees agreed that the University System of Georgia is effective in meeting the overall needs of higher education in the state.
