ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the immediate consequences of the picture of the student experience. It explores some of the implications for approaches to more effective student education. The chapter discusses the implications for research into higher education. It also discusses some general questions about future developments in higher education. The error results from attempting to deploy a theory of learning which would seem to be inappropriate when applied to learning within higher education— where every student must, almost by definition, be seen as having reached the required end of adult level performance. The chapter concentrates on only three aspects of another large area of concern: the orientation of much research into higher education, the lack of significant contact between research and traditional academic interests. A cursory examination of advertisements for polytechnics and colleges of higher education in the daily press shows that the public sector of higher education is already aware of the need to sell its courses to potential customers.
