ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the far-reaching effects of massive consumption of pornographic subject matter on patients in practices. It seeks to point out several aspects of the effects of massive pornography consumption and describes a number of theoretical concepts in relation to such use. The chapter explores some patients who differ widely in their uses of pornographic material, indicating some of the diverse functions such uses can serve and the varied effects and consequences of exposure to these materials. It focuses on one particular aspect, or characteristic, of the arousing nature of pornography, namely, its visibility–the fact that all the consumer can enjoy is the stimulation that accompanies the “visible,” that which the observable surface can offer. Heavy consumers of pornography live and act in a sort of unique perverse universe, or pornographic subculture, which trickles down, permeates and becomes absorbed into the fabric of large parts of their personality, consequently transforming them.
