ABSTRACT
The first chapter develops frameworks for understanding the architecture and urbanism of industrial buildings, in the context of their economic and social functions. Configurations of buildings for production are connected to two things: the human control mechanisms of the production process, linking form and function, and the way in which capital is distributed and concentrated, linking form and money. Marx’s phases of capitalist development are linked to particular types of spatial configurations and locations.
