ABSTRACT

Advanced technical systems are not imaginable without sensors. Their ability to receive signals from the environment, to extract relevant data, and to monitor the changing of environmental conditions and the status of the technical system itself are essential for technical systems. Sensing is not only important for industrial automata, for cars and airplanes and nearly the whole spectrum of recent household devices, but is a fundamental feature of life. All living systems have to respond to their environment to get special orientation, to pick up nutrients, to look for partners and competitors, and to recognize any danger around.
