ABSTRACT

I discussed Heimann’s experiments with neonates in Chapter 1. The neonates formed constructs of Heimann’s putting out his tongue and imitated him. In my present study the children also formed constructs about their environment and acted on it to their own advantage whenever they could. Even when they couldn’t act on it they still showed a great awareness of the environment. Like other animals they learned a lot from their parents and conscious imitation or avoidance of certain practices were common. Of course with an age range of 10-21 there were many different approaches to imitation. The ten-year-olds could not tell me of anything they would wish to imitate, but the older children could.
