ABSTRACT

The mother archetype is the generative, creative, numinous aspect of psyche. In any event, the feminine as God enhances the power of the mother complex as creating a profound longing by its withdrawal. The "Epode complex" is crystallised by the mother's entwining and then there being a continuous or intermittent absence, which creates a profound longing to bring the absent mother back to life. The fairy tale of the goose girl echoes the force of the Epode mother complex, the longing it leaves, and its link to the numinous. The touch of the abyss of the mother and the deep connection with the Pleromic archetype are made more apparent as the psychic energy shifts from the absent father to intensify the mother relationship. As the father mediates authority, his absence not only increases the Epode complex but creates a "hunger" for him and a search for an alternative form of order.
