ABSTRACT

Support from students' homefront can be a key element in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Parents and guardians are trying their best to help their children, but many of them need help with the different ways in which we are teaching math these days. Facilitating Family Math Events, along with a variety of other activities, can help parents be in tune with the math that their child is studying. Other events can include opportunities for parents to come into schools, work with teachers and students, and have access to the resources that can scaffold learning. Mathematics instruction has changed significantly in recent years with the adoption of new state standards. Schools should provide parents with a grade level mathematics handbook that specifically goes over the priority standards and discusses what students are expected to master during the school year.
