ABSTRACT

This chapter engages the challenges of non-student constituent groups (i.e., college and university staff) as political actors and supporters on-campus. The chapter begins by providing a substantive review of the literature that centers the practitioner’s experience, which yielded the following themes: 1) the contentious nature of our positions and choices, 2) racial battle fatigue, and 3) strategies for surviving, but not thriving. Next, authors explore essential practitioner skills, institutional strategies, and brief case studies building upon the themes presented in the literature.
