ABSTRACT

This chapter examines tensions on college and university campuses around student activism and free speech. For more than 100 years, rights to expressive freedom on campus has shifted to reflect the values and positions of those in or gaining power at the time. The author calls for three recommendations in response to these trends: 1) education about the First Amendment, 2) education about the history and current state of access and inclusion in U.S. higher education, and 3) education and practice in improved political discussions through campus-wide conversations about free expression.
