ABSTRACT

The important task of mate selection is the focus of this chapter. Recommendations will be provided for individuals who are interested in entering romantic relationships in the future or are in the early phases of one now. These suggestions are intended to assist in making the best decisions possible when choosing a long-term partner. Mate selection appears to be a major player in secure and satisfying marriages and other long-term committed relationships. Mate selection is thought to be one of the variables that significantly influences falling out of romantic love (FORL).

Chapter 11 shares not only suggestions that serve as a mate selection roadmap, but also information on why these suggestions are vital. The recommendations include: Become happy and healthy prior to mate selection; educate yourself about love and relationships; get to know yourself; decide, don’t slide into a relationship; increase awareness of social pressures; consider non-conscious processes; look for specific partner traits; know your deal-breakers; participate in couple’s counseling or other couple education; keep your sense of self; and reflect on the relationship if it doesn’t work out.

These recommendations were gathered through the author’s research, with many of them offered by those who had FORL themselves. Although nothing can guarantee the endurance of romantic love, implementing these suggestions is a great start.
