ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the possible consequences of secondary reorganization from two points of view: first, the likely effect upon the relationship between secondary and higher education; and second, the change in structure already accomplished by the comprehensive school in the secondary system of education. It looks at the type of research that has been conducted into comprehensive schools and outlines the areas of research to be undertaken in the course of the investigation. The impact of secondary reorganization upon the university is likely to affect three main areas. The first concerns the relationship between higher and secondary education. The second involves the increasing numbers of university entrants from comprehensive schools. The third—and less obvious—aspect is the reorganization and expansion of higher education in face of an increasing number of applicants. The British education system has been described as a series of filters, beginning in primary school and ending in higher education.
