Anthems: Introduction

The Anglican liturgy of Gibbons’s time permitted the singing of an anthem towards the end of Matins and Evensong, though it was not until 1662 that the provision was incorporated into the Book of Common Prayer, with the words ‘In Quires and places where they sing, here followeth the Anthem’. ¹
