ABSTRACT

In July 2010 the Alzheimer's Society organised a conference entitled "The National Dementia Declaration", which was set up to decide upon future strategy for dealing with people who are diagnosed with dementia. There were many occasions when humour saved the day but it is rather easy to lose one's sense of humour when living with a disease like Alzheimer's. There are dementia cafes and "Singing for the Brain" groups and a greater awareness of the needs of those with dementia, but these were not on offer then. Dementia is a disease of the brain and therefore a huge territory that is largely unmapped. Working with those who have dementia, and the people who look after them, gives us an opportunity to journey into this little-known country.
