ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that insofar as the attributes are each a quality of being an immediate intuition of the order of substance they all in principle appear in the order conceived through any one, whereas it is only as the order conceived that the attributes are each independently conceived through themselves. Spinoza identified the immediate infinite mode of extension as motion and rest and the mediate infinite mode of the same attribute as the ‘face of the whole universe’. Only as a quality of being an immediate intuition of the order of being is an attribute involved in the order of substance conceived through any attribute. The quality of being informed by the finite centre’s perspective is thus a finite mode and the centre’s experience of its attribute and it pertains to the essence of the finite perspective in the way the attribute pertains to the essence of substance.
