ABSTRACT

The Indonesian government has founded Perumnas since 1974 to promote planned housing development. In Indonesia, the percentage of urban population increases dramatically. This chapter presents the case study of evaluation of Planned Housing in Java. It attempts to discover the essence of Javanese living patterns and how Javanese integrate themselves successfully with their houses. It discusses the interior activity patterns in Javanese urban settlements. The Javanese culture could be found in the south central part of Java where Yogyakarta is situated. There are many group activities in the neighbourhood that are related to the frequently held rituals and other events typical in Java. For Condong Catur’s inhabitants to reaffirm traditional values, communal feasts are held at ceremonies and rites to commemorate important events in the life cycle: birth, circumcision, marriage and death. The traditional Javanese house is arranged in a linear sequence of spaces.
