ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the new divisions in Afrikanerdom in so far as they relate to Afrikaner perceptions of self-determination. The Conservative perception of self-determination is one of the attainments of freedom for the Afrikaner people in their own fatherland under their own government. The problems that confront Afrikaners who share the Conservative Party’s vision of collective self-determination are manifold. One problem confronting all Afrikaners who at the time of writing rely on the right to self-determination as the basis for their claim to self-rule is that - historically speaking - the right to self-determination developed in response to colonial oppression. The Nationalist Afrikaner vision of self-determination has come increasingly under pressure. The party is faced with a tough choice: if it wants to become a truly representative centre-right coalition it will have to sacrifice Afrikaner interests. Afrikaner politics, including Apartheid policies, was not only about racial discrimination.
