ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the notion of transmultilingualism in an attempt to develop a fresh perspective on translinguistic interactions. As a point of departure, our concern is to theorize the extraordinary ordinariness of multilingual forms and functions that are creatively remixed in an online context, and to account for how multilingual speakers challenge and reinforce myths and stereotypes of multilingual diversity. We define transmultilingual interactions as ordinary sociocultural encounters that see multilingual speakers perform and represent transmultilingualism as an embodied phenomenon across transmodal online platforms while reaching back to histories and pointing forward to future forms of transmultilingual practices. This broad take will lead us to argue that ordinary translinguistic practices should be re-theorized from a place of interaction where multilingual speakers enact creative language use and negotiate transmodally multilingual diversity in online spaces.
