ABSTRACT

This chapter describes technical vocabulary in carpentry, plumbing, automotive technology, and fabrication from the Language in the Trades Education (LATTE) project. It presents research on identifying single and multiword technical vocabulary in written professional pedagogical trades texts and spoken corpora made up of tutor talk in trade’s classes in WelTec. The chapter explores the technical word lists that were developed using these corpora and expert consultation and focuses on technical multiword units in the trades. One of the main aims of the vocabulary analysis in the LATTE project was to find out more about the amount of technical vocabulary in written and spoken trades texts. The qualitative analysis for the identification of technical vocabulary in the LATTE project involved a lexical decision task with trade’s tutors from WelTec. The development of bilingual technical word lists as part of the LATTE project was the focus of a summer scholarship from Victoria University of Wellington and Ako Aotearoa.
