ABSTRACT

Race and religion are established elements of Singapore’s diversity, with the crafting and refinement of institutions and policies to resolve issues as they have evolved over the past 50 years. In addition, there are new trends and issues which will contribute to the complexity of the new diversity that will become important in future. This chapter discusses three trends - the growing numbers of an ageing community; the evolution of new family forms; and the presence of a growing and more vocal lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community - which will impact on many other evolving areas of diversity in the social structure. Managing these trends is essential to avoid the debilitating cultural conflicts found in the industrialised democracies.
