ABSTRACT

This chapter is pivotal to the entire book, as it postulates the civilizational codings for the Indian manager – offering a series of perspectives on key fronts of sociopsychological themes of identity (Who am I?), context sensitivity, preoccupation with hierarchy, patriarchy and gender and faith. On each of these fronts, the chapter offers insights and an understanding of dilemmas that the Indian manager is confronted with. These lead to an examination of deep cleavage in the mind and heart of the Indian manager. The chapter builds on the two archetypal symbols of Hema and Ravi to explore these two faces of Indianness and how these manifest in organizations and systems. The chapter makes several references to eminent thinkers, including Ashis Nandy, Dharampal, Sudhir Kakar and Pulin Garg, leveraging their insights on the Indian psyche and mind-set.
