ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the dimension to the EMERGE approach, that of leadership "repertoires" for taking collective action. It focuses on the dyadic relationship between leaders and followers working collaboratively within and across organizational boundaries on common EMERGE leadership initiatives. The leadership team is at the center of the networked coalition and is comprised of a leader and followers that work together to realize the vision. The inherent complexity and dynamic nature of wicked challenges requires leaders and followers to embrace a variety of sizing up, taking action and reflective practice repertoires to address the challenges. The discursive leadership process of sizing up and taking action in conditions of emergence is at the same time analytic and synthetic. The new project management institute agile certification recognizes that leading in conditions of emergence requires a particular kind of responsiveness and adaptability; it needs leaders who are "agile.".
