ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a comparative study of the participation in education of British and Dutch adult women. It shows that Feminist debate and the study of ‘Women’s Studies’ are much more alive and lively in Britain than in the Netherlands. The number of British young people who follow university and other Higher Education does not differ greatly from the number of Dutch students. The Dutch system is rather simple compared to the British system with its mandatory and discretionary awards, access funds, assisted studentship, and extra allowance for older students, bursaries for nurse education, awards for paramedical courses, postgraduate awards and sponsorships. In The Netherlands everybody age 18–27 pays exactly the same fees and gets the same grants, whether in university or in other Higher Education. Traditionally women in The Netherlands stayed at home much more than in other countries, cleaning and scrubbing.
