ABSTRACT

The medicalization of cannabis is happening in the midst of a war on drugs, America's longest war, making it easy to forget that criminalization is a brief anomaly in the human history of cannabis use. Fully pharmaceuticalized cannabis medicines could mark the entry into full medicalization. The new pharmaceuticalized cannabis medicines would almost certainly entail forms of ingestion and effects so distinct from its whole plant form as to be unidentifiable. Within the lifeworld, the networks that connect information, claims, and stories about cannabis are those of family and friends, which broker legitimacy that is inherently relational. Future research that compares and contrasts more diverse cohorts over the life course might build on the observations found and determine if certain practices, attitudes, or styles differ by age or stage in life.
