ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a type of index and searching technique of general applicability, rather than with searching in one subject area. Citation searching, a form of searching offering both unique capabilities in itself, and also an ideal complement to other searching techniques, well merits individual treatment. Citation indexes are only available online in the forms of the files produced by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). The chapter examines an introduction to the concept of citation searching and an exposition of its advantages, as well as a primer on the use of the ISI files. Citation practices of authors, both individually and en masse, are clearly of importance given the increasing tendency for citation analysis to be used for sociometric and scientometric studies. A more general method of co-citation searching involves searching for co-cited authors, rather than particular documents.
