ABSTRACT

Radioactive emissions from nuclear power plants, though quite low under normal conditions, can have serious environmental consequences in the event of a reactor accident such as that at Chernobyl. Development of additional energy resources or alternative energy technologies also has important environmental implications. The goals of energy self-sufficiency and environmental quality clash most acutely in the United States in the Rocky Mountain region where much of the new coal mining, oil shale production, and development of liquefaction and gasification industries are expected to be concentrated. Transportation research information service produced by the transportation research board and the United States department of transportation, is a major database for energy-related environmental aspects of air, highway, rail and maritime transport, mass transit and other modes of transportation. The United States federal government procurement and contracting system vets requests for proposals or bids on energy and environmental projects.
