ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to aid the reader in learning more about the variety of engineering databases available and in using some of their features to develop effective search strategies. BEFO contains approximately 114,000 citations with abstracts primarily in German and titles also in English. It is produced by FIZ Technik and is an index to the world's literature on the management of engineering projects. Ei Engineering is also about to introduce a new product: the CITE Database, available either on magnetic tape or in CD-ROM format. Dokumentation Elektrotechnik, ZDE, contains citations and abstracts of articles, books, patents, reports, dissertations and conference papers in the fields of control engineering, energy engineering, precision engineering, technical optics, measurement, communications and electrical engineering. Engineering is well-represented in databases, especially some of the specialized databases that have been developed. Metadex, produced by Materials Information, a joint service of ASM International and The Institute of Metals, is available on most of the larger host systems.
