ABSTRACT

There are several trends that reveal a few significant things about enemy archetypes. The most obvious trend is that the incidence of the rabid fox enemy type declines across the course of the game. The one-two punch (OTP), rabid fox, and magic imp make up the majority of the game's enemies. The enemy to order (ETO) slice of the graph is large, which makes sense since that portion includes lots of different kinds of enemies, but it's not so large as to make archetypes irrelevant. The ETO type peaks in prevalence at Nibelheim and then declines a bit before leveling off for the rest of the game. One might logically expect that ETOs, who are often combinations or enhanced versions of other types, would become increasingly prevalent across the course of the game. Up to a point, that's true, but even in the last dungeons, the designers don't abandon the use of enemy archetypes.
