ABSTRACT

The story of wartime education in London is an account of interrupted beginnings. The attempt to provide a system of education amid the perils and distractions of wartime London became a heartbreaking task for all connected with the Education Services. The impact of the war on the education services in London was immediate and shattering. The central staff of the Education Department were allocated to other duties and the teachers who did not accompany the children to the reception areas were loaned to other services. Some of the school buildings were re-claimed from the services which had occupied them, educational equipment was made available and the teaching staff were recalled from the services to which they had been loaned. In the emergency schools, as far as circumstances would permit, educational progress was resumed. With the increasing employment of women in the war industries the Education Committee extended the day nursery accommodation for children under school age.
