ABSTRACT

As a young academic, Arnold Rose, an esteemed sociologist, played a major role in creating An American Dilemma, the two-volume masterwork of Swedish social scientist, Gunnar Myrdal, that was published in 1944. School desegregation was moving forward in the South, usually under the protection of federal troops who provided safe passage when racist crowds tried to block the entry of children into what were once all-white schools. The social structure and culture of old Dixie were now being challenged through nonviolent tactics in the streets and via economic boycotts.
