ABSTRACT

First I would like to thank you for inviting me to participate in this all-important forum aimed at addressing gender and development issues in Africa. It is my pleasure to contribute a chapter and have the opportunity to highlight problems in the promotion of women’s access to credit as a way of integrating women in development. This chapter has two main sections: the first section of the chapter reports on the experiences of the Ghana Credit Union Association; and the second reports on the first West African regional meeting of the Council for the Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa. Both sections indicate the distance still to be travelled in ensuring adequate access to microfinance for women in Africa.
