ABSTRACT

Hans Moller enjoyed entertaining others with news from the capital and was probably rather good at giving his stories a little added colour. The major topic of conversation in Copenhagen in the autumn of 1733 and spring of 1734 was the so-called divine gatherings of the pietists. The church at the time was split between orthodox priests and pietists. Orthodox priests advocated a church firmly controlled by the state and believed that Christianity should only be preached in churches. Hans Moller had clearly set in motion a process whose consequences he could not have foreseen. Hans Moller had been released from the dungeon after the sentence at the town court on 9 August. He took residence or work with Christen Frost, the alehouse keeper on the town square, who had also helped him during the court case.
