ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes that for purposes of sexual gratification, and projection of anxiety, as Jordi Sala so vividly conveys, children may be abused in other ways; parental depression, for example, may be cruelly projected from early on, in a way that may also be damaging. In a very moving paper, Donald Moss gives an account of how such feelings may be passed on. He describes how as a young man, when he had arrived late for his beloved grandfather's funeral, his aunt, angry with him for missing the funeral, slapped him on the face. In a different context, Christoph Hering, writing about the film The Alien (1994), shows how such films, rather than helping the audience to work through such fears, instead excite the audience.
