ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an analysis of an 11-year-old boy who was referred to the author by a colleague who saw him in therapy for a brief time. His analysis started shortly after he moved to California. Todd's presenting problem was his repressed anger with his underlying depression, skin picking and hair pulling. Todd's problems manifested fully when he was 5 years old. He had a history of self-harming and hair pulling from a very young age that coincided with his parent's marital discord. Todd's trichotillomania and self-harming behaviour escalated around the time his parents' divorce was finalising. Todd reported that 'she would put on a blank face' which made him feel confused. The analysis continued to explore Todd's conflicts over his aggression and observing his compromise solution in the analytic process. His analysis has been complex, lively and rewarding.
