ABSTRACT

In this chapter, data on levels of Ireland’s media attention for climate change are presented. Ireland’s coverage broadly follows international patterns, rising around the release of IPCC reports and UN climate conferences, and fading away at other times. However, Ireland’s level of coverage is lower than the European average. A frame analysis of a representative sample of Irish coverage from 2007 to 2016 shows that the Irish print media view climate change as a political issue, with coverage emphasising local party politics and EU politics especially. Climate sceptics are present in Irish coverage; they do not engage with the substance of climate science but rather engage in dismissive, sarcastic, and derogatory discourses.
