ABSTRACT

Avrupa Milli Gorus Teskilstleri (AMGT) or, simply Milli Gorus, is an Islamist organisation of Turkish immigrants in Europe. Most of the literature available on AMGT describes the organisation as being a sub-division of Milli Selamet Partisi (MSP) - what is the Refah Partisi or Welfare Party. AMGT exists in its own right within Turkish migrant communities who themselves define and set the agenda for the organisation. The organisation’s Danish chairman interpreted the name as follows: It is, in so much as one adheres to the strictly literal sense of the words, correct to translate Milli Gorus into Danish as: ‘The National Standpoint’. To translate Milli as ‘national’ would limit the movement to a Turkish nationalist standpoint, a standpoint which the organisation very clearly distances itself from. The beginnings of Milli Gorus can be traced back to the end of the 1960s when Necmetting Erbakan, the founder of the movement and its ideological inspiration formed the MSP.
