ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how workers can have an increased voice by using tools outside of the typical legal ones. Karl Marx coined the term 'reserve army of labour' to describe how Capitalism needs a certain percentage of workers to be unemployed to keep wages down. The phrase 'emotional labour' describes the burden on workers to constantly be viewed by customers as in good mood, or having a positive disposition. Organizational justice offers an explanation of how when workers feel more included they perform better in the workplace. Interactional justice shows that the fairness of interpersonal justice in the workplace is important in regards to workers feeling included and the belief in fairness of outcomes. Workers can distinguish themselves based on income or education as a lawyer may shun the label of 'wage slave' because they live in a large house and drive a nice car.
